In more ancient times, these individuals often were considered spokespersons for the gods; and in some societies, this is still more or less the case. Shamans and ecstatics communicate with spirits while in trance states, and pass along the messages they receive.

Different from "mediums," who contact and communicate messages from the dead, "channels" are like radio antennae that receive communication from sources "not in form." These may be messages from people who have died, but more usually they are from other energetic sources. Other dimensions, other levels of energy.

In our culture, for at least several decades, we have seen a number of such individuals, including Edgar Cayce and Jane Roberts (The Seth Material), Ramtha and more. Library bookshelves are lined with dozens of books of information from such sources.

As a public speaker, it seems fairly clear to me that the process of teaching a class, facilitating a workshop or giving a presentation - especially on spiritual topics with Q&A sessions - involves some degree of "channeling." It is impossible to anticipate and prepare for the range of questions and interactions that may happen. At some point the information itself may come forward, something I had never consciously considered, but is consistent and feels right.
